For residents, businesses and visitors across north-east Essex, better rail links between Colchester and Clacton-on-Sea wouldn’t just be convenient - they could be transformative.
Transport East has recently shared evidence highlighting the potential opportunities from increasing rail frequency between Clacton-on-Sea and Colchester from one train per hour to two, including during off-peak times.
This enhancement could transform connectivity and unlock significant opportunities for communities and businesses across north Essex.
Our report, The strategic case for rail service enhancements between Colchester and Clacton-on-Sea, provides detailed insight on the challenges and opportunities to delivery.
The Opportunity
The Colchester - Clacton-on-Sea rail corridor, known as the Sunshine Coast Line, is a vital link for approximately 70,000 people living within 1km of stations along the route. Why this matters now
With Greater Anglia now in public ownership and Essex set to become a Mayoral Combined Authority, we have a unique window of opportunity to align local ambitions with regional and national priorities.
Crucially, these enhancements are achievable without major new infrastructure works. Existing timetable capacity means additional services could run using current rolling stock and crew - making this a cost-efficient intervention with significant long-term benefits.
Your voice matters
